The Nikolayev Zoo, one of the best zoos in Ukraine, was founded by N. P. Leontovich, the mayor of Nikolayev, in 1901. In 1977, the Zoo received 23 hectares of new space for exhibits. The Nikolayev Zoo has one of the largest collections, consisting of more than 350 different species of animals. Many of these animals are rare today. It is also one of the largest zoos in total space in Ukraine.
