Amanuenses ("One who copies or writes from the dictation of another," plural)

Spring 2009
Installation (at Lehman College Gallery, NYC)

On a wall ten large pieces of handmade papers hang with text that is about my mother and her loss of her ability to write.

This pulp painted text was created on translucent paper, so the text on the reverse side shows through. The white ground between the letters was then cut out. This elimination of this ‘ground’ around the writing makes the text virtually unreadable and forces the viewer to notice the absence of words as a presence of space or silence.

Two books are also part of this installation: Amanuensis and GOD, both works about the meaning of signature and identity.

(In honor of Gittel Silverberg)
