Woman (Nipple Puppet)

2003
Cast flax paper, string, kid glove, aluminum shelf
14" x 4" x 3"
Unique

This book object reduces "woman" to symbols: a puppet figure comprised of nipple and ribs in contrast to a shrunken kid glove effaced by words.

The text reflects upon the entrapments of women, in the richness of marriage bonds and ritual. The marking, like tattoos, make the tiny glove become less like the formal attire for a woman's hand and more the skin it once was. The glove also functions as stand-in for the symbolic referent to marriage (as in, she gave him her hand in marriage).
