Thoughts in the Form of a Letter

2003
Pulp painted and cut abaca papers
9" x 12.25" 1.25"
Edition of 5

Pulp painted text -- an essay about changing perceptions in an aging marriage relationship -- was created on translucent paper, so the text on the reverse side shows through. The white ground between the letters was then cut out and placed in plastic sacks, which were inlayed into the front and back covers.

The elimination of the "ground" around the writing makes the text virtually unreadable. The collection of the "in-between" in 2 sacks forces the viewer to notice the absence of words as a presence of space or silence, and perhaps consider parallels with the text's theme of marriage.
