Donor Recognition Campaign

The Friends of the South Huntington Public Library raise money to support the library in a number of ways. The most recent and successful fund raiser was conducted in 2003-04, when the group coordinated a Donor Recognition Campaign to raise funds to build and landscape an Outdoor Garden at the new library building, which opened in July, 2004.

During the campaign, donors purchased space on bluestones on which their messages were engraved. The bluestones make up the walkway on the outer perimeter of the garden (see photos).

There were four levels of giving, based on the amount of space desired for the engraved message. Many library patrons participated in the fund raiser, and now the library has a beautiful outdoor area that can be used as a venue for programs or simply a place to sit and read or study. During good weather, there are chairs and tables with market umbrellas set up on the patio, and patrons can be seen enjoying the fresh air. The annual garden in the outdoor space was named in honor of Dr. Arthur Bing, a former trustee, longtime library supporter and horticulturist who haas donated his time and materials to beautify the landscaping at both the former and current library buildings.

The Outdoor Garden would not have been possible without the support of the Friends and their many contributors, since the $11.9-million building bond was earmarked only to construct and equip the new building.

Other Fund-Raising Projects

The Friends also raise money to support the Library through membership dues and the sale of pens and canvas tote bags. The pens are $1 each and may be purchased at the Circulation Desk.

The canvas bags are 11.5 inches wide by 13 inches high and expand to hold up to four good-sized books. They are made of washable natural-color canvas and feature the Friends' name and logo in dark red.

The bags are great for carrying library materials to and from the library and make great gifts for book lovers as well as teachers and bus drivers! They are $8 each and may be purchased at the Circulation Desk. Get yours today!
