Lenin Peak

Brief Historical Background:

  Ibn Sina Peak, widely known as Lenin Peak, is the highest mountain in the Trans-Alay Range of Central Asia and the second highest peak in the Pamir Mountains, exceeded only by Ismoili Somoni Peak. It is located on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. When it was first discovered in 1871, it was originally named Mount Kaufmann after Konstantin Kaufman who was the first Governor-General of Russian Turkestan. In 1928 the peak was renamed Lenin Peak in honor of Vladimir Ilich Lenin, the founder of Russian Communism. Since July 2006 the peak has been officially called Ibn Sina Peak, after Abu Ali ibn Sina .

Technical difficulty:

  The easiest route to the summit involves rock/snow/ice climbing. Currently, there are sixteen established routes, some of which are not very complicated, making the peak quite popular among experienced climbers. Special skills and full set of mountaineering gear is needed.
