Nisqually River
Just inside the Nisqually Entrance on Hwy. 706, at the southwest corner of the park, is a scenic overlook for the Nisqually River. The river snakes its way through a vast expanse of moraine that was left behind by Nisqually Glacier as it receded up the mountain over time. In dry weather, visitors can climb down from the overlook, via a gravel path, to explore.
Be Prepared:
- Protect your feet by wearing sneakers or hiking shoes as rocks and boulders may become loose as you walk and climb over them.
- Watch your step on the footbridges as they are narrow and only have one handrail.
What to Expect:
- The Nisqually River, which possesses a milky color due to glacial flour.
- Wide open views of the surrounding mountainside.
- Man-made footbridges covering water and other difficult areas. Grooves are cut into them so visitors don't slip.
