Trail of the Shadows

Directly across the road from the National Park Inn in Longmire is a 0.7 mile loop through an old growth forest known as the Trail of the Shadows. Signs posted throughout the trail tell the story of James Longmire, a Washington pioneer and climbing guide who, upon seeing the warm mineral springs here in the 1880s, eventually built a resort and spa named Longmire Medical Springs, and later the Longmire Springs Hotel.

Be Prepared:
  • Though highly recommended during James Longmire's time, visitors are strongly urged not to drink from the mineral springs.

What to Expect:
  • One of James Longmire's original homestead cabins.

  • Bubbling mineral springs (some with surrounding stone structures).

  • Impressive western redcedar and other plant life.

  • Views of Mt. Rainier from trail and porch of National Park Inn.
