Building a Digital Rights Collection

Copyright in the Digital Age

Managing digital license agreements has never been more difficult. At the center we create projects that leverages information from many sources. We use content from Columbia University Libraries, student work, and online content providers, such as Flickr. Therefore, it is very important to identify the owner of the work, and document the agreement that is held with that Rihghts Holder. Traditionally, this was handled legally for Academic Libraries within the "Fair Use". Now there is another body that - Creative Commons, that addresses this concern for the "Open" environment. Creative Commons allows content creators to establish ownership of their content on the web, while also allowing free use of the items.
