Satomi Minegishi(Japan): "What Makes us Different --- Women's Social Status"

Writing Competition Third Prize Winner

What makes us different in this world? Race, education, culture, environment, gender; there are so many factors. These factors raise different observations on society and social class. However, gender is the most powerful influence that affects and establishes different ideas and attitude between men and women. Historically, the stereotypical ideas of gender make walls which make roots between men and women.

First of all, it is obvious that men and women have different appearances and physical abilities. When people come across each other on the street, the first thing most people recognize is the other's sex. It is after recognizing the gender difference, not race, or culture differences for example, that men's attitudes tend to change. That is why it is common that men say "ladies first," which is one of social manners in the American and Western countries, because men have to care about women as gentleman. For example, when a man walks on the street with a woman, he walks on the road side and protects her from an accident or snatching. In another case, a man holds the elevator door and let a woman go first, so that she won't be hurt by closing door of the elevator. The man opens the door to let the woman goes first, and the man goes later.

However, the different appearances and physical features of make them protected by some men and attacked by others, which include rape, sexual assault and aggravated assault. Needless to say, most victims of the sexual crimes are women. The reason is because women are physically more delicate and weaker than men. For example, an estimate of the worldwide rape and sexual assault research shows that the US has a conviction rate 12 times higher than the world average, and 75 times higher than Italy, Greece, or Japan for rape and sexual assault problems. Every year, it is possible that there are more than 325,165 men in prison for sexual assault in the US. Also, there are countries with known high rates of fatherlessness like New Zealand, Kyrgyzstan, Korea, Belarus, Russia, South Africa, and the US. In these countries, these victims, women, tend to be not to get marry because of men's society. Then, these women fall down situations which have to grow their child up without any support. In these cases, there are many women who face on financial problems. In this sense, this report shows people how women suffer from their status and how many sexual assaults are caused people's daily lives (no author, Fathers' Manifesto and Christian Party.)

Furthermore, people can see the different treatments of athlete's physical abilities. Athletic departments represent the cases. When audiences watch games such as soccer, swimming or running, players are separated by men and women. This is because the power of men and women is different. To be treated fairly, it is obvious that both players have to be separated. Otherwise, it might cause many problems which include injury and women's mental state.

Women were treated unfairly by being regarded to only act as "a good wife and wise mother" until a few decades ago. This idea rose because women have less physical power, and because of that they were not treated as fairly as men. That is why women were expected to master such domestic skills as sewing and cooking as well as develop the moral and intellectual skills to raise strong, intelligent sons and daughters for the sake of the nation -a man's society. This shows how low women's status was in the society and it was connected to chauvinism. Male chauvinism is a term used to describe the belief that men are superior to women. Historically, women suffered from this discrimination that women were inferior to men or were treated negatively based solely upon their gender. However, women's social and economical states were improved dramatically through feminism. This advocated equality for women and this idea involved movements, theories and philosophies. In Japan, women's rights of vote were enacted at a national level in 1945, though women were allowed to vote in some counties in 1880. Before then, women did not have any rights to participate in government and law making. Due to becoming the loser in WW2, people started to follow the idea of feminism in Japan under the instruction of the U.S. which has the idea of "All men are created equal." In this sense, the change had a big effect the rising women's social status in Japan. Because of discrimination and chauvinism, men and women were separated and this caused a lot of issues in the past.

In addition, it is interesting that men and women have different expectations of the opposite sex. Researchers at the University of Iowa found that men want certain things in women, and the research showed interesting results. According to this research, in 1939, men tended to expect women to be chaste, beautiful and sexy. However, men increasingly are interested in intelligent, educated women who are financially stable nowadays. Expectations of men also fit to women. Historically, most women unconsciously seek an aggressive male mate. In women's DNA, it shows their preference for a mate who will protect and provide for her and her children. Also, naturally women have been attracted to powerful and aggressive men who have proven to be successful. However, the idea is changing. Nowadays men's attractiveness to women is far more about personality than physical looks. These results show the audience the change in people's views of the opposite sex and what they want in a mate. (Sally Law)

There have been many positive changes for women recently. Through the improvement of women's rights and social status, women's financial abilities changed. It is not rare that some women earn more money than men. The reason is because employers measure women's work by abilities rather than their sex. Although financial stability is not perfectly fair between men and women, women's points of view towards the opposite sex has changed and affected their lives.

However, people still want to divide their sex at work. People can see women wear dresses or skirts while men wear suits in offices. Women are expected to decorate themselves with clothes and accessories while men do not need to decorate themselves. These social views are strongly rooted in our life.

In addition, the gender discrimination is seen in poor nations, especially in Africa. In a book written by Angelina Jolie called Journal on My Travel, she finds that African women are not treated as fairly as men are. While men can study and work for protecting their lives and families, all women can do is follow the men without any expectation. The reason is because women's social status is under men's. In this sense, regardless of being educated or uneducated people, men and women are treated unfairly in the world.

In conclusion, race, education, culture and environment can be divisive factor between men and women. However, it seems that gender is the most common that makes us different. These ideas of dividing men and women developed in the past. But still now these differences affect our lives. People keep in their mind what are their domestic roles and social roles in their lives. In fact, men and women should be put on the same level. People's gender has to be taken into consideration, and then women have to be treated fairly.
