Poetry: Metaphor & Simile

Both metaphors and similes compare two fundamentally unlike objects. These poetic devices can be used to highlight or underscore an object's unique traits.

Exercise: Simile Serendipity

Have one person secretly choose a well know poem and reveal how many metaphors or similies are included.  The person choosing the poem should reveal the general theme or mood of the poem. The other person should make a list of phrases that complete the hidden metaphor. Read the poem aloud with the new metaphors and similes. Although this activity may produce some nonsensical pairings, you may find a powerful contrast.
