  1. Where is Oakwood Heights?

    Oakwood Heights includes the area bounded by North Columbus, East Lincoln and Lorraine Avenues. It is centrally located in lower Westchester and is serviced by many convenient modes of transportation. There are three major railroad stations on the MetroNorth commuter line. Although Mount Vernon East is the closest station, Mount Vernon West and Fleetwood are within driving distance. The commute from Mount Vernon to New York City is 26 minutes. Several major highways are easily accessible from Oakwood Heights (Hutchinson River Parkway, Cross County Expressway, Major Deegan/NYS Thruway, Bronx River Parkway, Sprain Brook Parkway, Saw Mill Parkway, Bronx River Parkway and Interstate 95).

  2. What type of homes are in Oakwood Heights?Oakwood Heights is a community of large single family homes with many amenities in a variety of styles, such as Tudor, Mediterranean, Arts& Crafts, Colonial, English Cottage. The homes are beautifully landscaped and situated on mature tree-lined streets. It is primarily zoned for single family homes, with the exception of some dwellings on Willard, Lorraine, and North Columbus. It was founded at the turn of the 20th century as picturesque residential park in the new suburbs formed with the expansion of the New York Railroad.
  3. When was OHHA formed?The Oakwood Heights Homeowners Association (OHHA) was formed in 1963.
  4. What does OHHA do?

    Maintenance and Improvement

    • Fight against downgrading variances and zoning changes in Oakwood Heights and surrounding areas.
    • Help enforce zoning regulations.
    • Work on traffic conditions (i.e. parking regulations, stop signs, no-through trucking)
    • Meet with law enforcement officials to request adequate protection
    • Encourage beautification by the City and its residents.

    Politically

    • Hold annual meeting at election time with candidates for local office.
    • Send mass delegations to the City Council, when necessary.
    • Maintain liaison with City departments.

    Socially>

    • Hold annual Block Party in September.
  5. When and where are the meetings held?Meetings are usually held quarterly or biannually, at a location to be determined. Recently, the Wartburg Home has generously offered the use of its meeting rooms.
  6. What are the levels of officership?

    The Executive Committee consists of a group of volunteers. Recent active members have been Fiorella Kelley, Lyndia Hayden, Emily Lowe, Ponce Hatch, Andre Butler, Wendy Attipoe, and Dan Aronson. Dan also serves as the Treasurer. In the future we would like to elect a President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, and Treasurer at an annual June meeting.

    The Block Captains are the first and chief contacts with the organization. There is at least one Block Captain for each street. They are responsible for keeping residents up to date on meetings and issues that affect the neighborhood, as well as answering questions. They are also responsible for relaying complaints to the City Services Committee.

  7. How many committees does OHHA have?Traditionally, the OHHA has had four committes. The Welcoming Committee, City Services Committee, Block Party Committee and Holiday Party Committee. Anyone willing to join a Committee should contact us.
  8. What are the annual dues and where is the money spent?$20 per household. Dues have been used to cover expenses for printing and mailing of the OHHA newsletter, updating the OHHA database software, awarding academic prizes to students at Holmes School, and to cover expenses of the annual block party. The treasurer for the organization is Dan Aronson of East Prospect Avenue.
  9. If I wanted to make a complaint, what should I do?You should contact the Building Department, City Hall, 665-2843. The Commissioner is Ralph Tedesco. The Commissioner has started a bi-annual Community Meeting discussing various Quality of Life issues in Mt. Vernon. Notices are posted in the Journal News as well as in City Hall. Complaints do not have to be limited to your immediate neighborhood. A complaint form should be filed in writing.,
