The single crochet is the basic crochet stitch for making fabric.
All the other stitches are variations of this stitch.
How to work a single crochet into a chain stitch
Make a foundation chain one chain more than the number of single crochet stitches called for.
- Insert the hook into the center of the second chain from the hook (will count as turning chain) (For repeat, insert into the next stitch) (2 loops on hook).
- Yarn over.
- Draw the yarn through the chain (2 loops on hook).
- Yarn over.
- Draw the yarn through the 2 loops on hook (one single crochet completed).
- Repeat steps 1 to 5 across to the end of the foundation chain.
How to work a single crochet into a row of stitches
To begin the second row, turn your work. Chain one for the turning chain (does not count as a stitch).
- Insert the hook under the top 2 loops of the stitch in the row below.
- Yarn over.
- Draw the yarn through the stitch.
- Yarn over
- Draw the yarn through 2 loops on hook (first single crochet completed).
- Repeat steps 1 to 5 in each single crochet across to the end of the row.
