“Tall Poppy”
Meaning in conversation: One who boasts or brags but is socially targeted and ‘taken down’ because of their boastfulness. The phrase alludes to the fact that only the tall poppies are eaten, so those that ‘grow’ too much for their own good are ‘eaten’ by society.
Example:“God, he just won’t shut up about his degrees, his money, or that new sports car. That tall poppy needs to be taken down a peg or two.”
