The half double crochet is halfway between a single crochet and a double crochet in height.

How to work a half double crochet stitch into a chain

Make a foundation chain one chain more than the number of half double crochet stitches called for.

  1. Yarn over the hook once.
  2. Insert the hook into the third chain from the hook (will count as the turning chain)(For repeat, insert into the next stitch).
  3. Yarn over.
  4. Draw the yarn through the chain (3 loops on hook).
  5. Yarn over.
  6. Draw the yarn through all 3 loops (one half double crochet completed).
  7. Repeat steps 1 to 6 across to the end of the foundation chain.

How to work a half double crochet into a row of stitches

To begin the second row, turn your work. Chain two for the turning chain.

  1. Yarn over.
  2. Insert the hook from the front to the back under the top 2 loops of the next crochet stitch in the row below.
  3. Yarn over.
  4. Draw the yarn through the chain (3 loops on hook).
  5. Yarn over.
  6. Draw the yarn through all 3 loops (one half double crochet completed).
  7. Repeat steps 1 to 6 across to the end of the foundation chain.
